Machu PicchuLuxury Peru Tour Holidays

Our list of Peru hotels should help whilst on your Peru tour. Make your Peru holiday the best of all Peru holidays. It holds all the mystery and magnificence of the magical South American continent, tailor made Peru holds a special place in a traveller’s wish list and imagination. It resonates with ancient lost cities and commanding landscapes, it echoes with haunting music and it explodes with colour. Peru is exciting, entrancing and for those trekkers on the Machu Picchu trail, totally exhilarating. It is a kaleidoscope of
natural wonders, ancient civilisations, legends and folklore. It is where ancient cities, such as the Inca capital of Cusco, sit in splendour and vie for interest with the modern capital of Lima. It is a land where the lush Amazon rainforest contrasts with the dry Andean canyons and high arid plateaux. And while its festivals honour its ancient customs at the Inca festival of Inti Raymi, its Spanish Catholic heritage is remembered in another bout of feasting and praying on All Saints Day.

Peru can be divided into three major regions – the long, low coastal strip which houses the main cities of Lima and Trujillo, the remote vastness of the Amazon basin in the east, and in the centre the magnificent Andes Mountains. Any visit to this region must begin in Cusco, not just for its amazing mélange of Inca and Spanish culture, but also for its standing as the gateway to Machu Picchu. This is what many visitors come to Peru for – an invigorating four-day trek, a one-day trek or a stunning train journey all ending at the famous sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

But Peru is more than ancient civilisations, it is also filled with natural wonders from the Huascaran National Park with its vast mountains, to the magic of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and home to the unique floating reed islands of Uros. Then there is the extraordinary Amazon rainforest whose abundant flora and fauna contrasts with the volcanoes and canyons of the Colca Valley. Peru - a fascinating land of history, life, colour and contrast.

Accommodation in Peru is an exciting collection of excellent hotels, converted palaces, local-style posadas and rustic, yet ideally situated lodges. Travel is by
comfortable trains, easy flights and the occasional boat, helicopter or canoe. Surely now is the time to be crossing Peru off that travelling wish list?

    Machu Picchu & Cusco
  • Wonders of the Latin American world
  • Archaeological treasures
  • Fascinating cultural mix

Machu Picchu and Cusco are two of the world’s best known and fascinating sites, and both are a ‘must’ on anyone’s visit to Peru. Cusco, the ‘ancient Inca capital’, is
a beautiful, yet rare mix of indigenous culture and colonial splendour. It was ruled by the magnificent Incas from 1200AD, until the Spanish conquistadors marched
in in 1534. Today many interesting highlights from both these civilizations await any visitor, including the nearby ruins of Sacsayhuaman and Tambomachay, and out to the Sacred Valley and the traditional markets at Pisac and Chinchero.
Machu Picchu, the magical Lost City of the Incas, hides in the lush, Andean mountains some 70 miles from Cusco. These ancient ruins are believed to have been built in the mid-15th century by Inca Pachacutec and were then mysteriously lost in history until stumbled upon in 1911 by the explorer Hiram Bingham. Despite recent studies, knowledge of Machu Picchu remains sketchy, with evidence merely suggesting it must once have been an important ceremonial centre. What is clear is that anyone making the effort to visit the site will be duly rewarded.
Access to Machu Picchu is by foot or train.
